JR High: check!

And here comes high school again! Been a fun week celebrating Peirce.. He is a good egg.

This week was his grade nine celebration. They held it at the Red and White Club. It is really fun to see him interact with his friends.

Be The Change

I first learned about Deborah Ellis when I was in a book club with Jill when she was in elementary school. Another boy and his mom had attended an event where she spoke and they raved about her. They loved her so much the librarian changed the book club plans so we could include some of her books.

Last night I went to an event at the library where Deborah Ellis spoke. I have really enjoyed her books over the years. I have read The Breadwinner with students in the past and have gone on to read many of her other books:

No Ordinary Day
etc. etc.

I've read 'em all. Well I thought I had! I found out she has a few more out....so off I go to the library.

When we got downtown we went into the library and took the elevator up. Guess who was in the elevator with us??! Yes! Deborah Ellis! She was very approachable and real. It was great to meet her. Unfortunately, when I took a picture with her, I didn't take the time to check to make sure it was clear. LOL I was a little star struck, I guess!

Melissa, one of my students, went to it as well and she read The Breadwinner trilogy in preparation for it. Last night we found out that a movie is coming out in October. I'm hoping we can have our grade 3's, with Melissa's inspiration, read The Breadwinner over the summer and then have it be part of Battle of the Books. It would be fun to go to the movie together!

Last night the focus on the evening was making a difference. Deborah Ellis spoke about some of her experiences and then they had kids from two schools talk about projects they’ve done…basically service learning. One school has been working on petitioning the government to bring drinking water to native reserves that haven’t had safe drinking water for more than 20 years despite having water treatment plants on their reserve (they’re non-functional because they don’t know how to care for them) and a school in Strathmore that has done a project where they learned about different ways to help organizations besides through fundraising. It was really quite inspiring.

SBT: Seussical the Musical

I love the Storybook Theatre organization. We have been volunteering with them for years and I love it now as much as I ever did! Last night we saw Seussical the Musical. It was fabulous. The music and action is non-stop. You have to have some serious energy to be a part of this show.

Tony was very excited to volunteer. He said he had never volunteered before. I was a little worried he wouldn't enjoy the play because he wasn't familiar with Dr Seuss. He said he really enjoyed it though. It's hard to enjoy all that action and music.

Almost at One Year

On June 10, almost a year ago, I made a decision to exercise every day. I'm coming up on the one year mark and want to do something to celebrate. Any ideas??

Stroke Recovery Day 30

Today is one month since Allen's stroke. I never imagined anything like this even possible for us. We are grateful for the experience and know things could have been much worse. Every day I tell him: Thanks for not dying. Ha! We marked the day today by taking some baking to the nurses at the stroke clinic at Foothills and by visiting our friend, Merlin there. Merlin injured his spine body surfing in Hawaii the same week Allen had his stroke. We admire Merlin's fighting spirit and cheerful smile through his big challenges.Merlin has always been a role model for us and even more-so now. We expect a miracle for him just as we have experienced.
Allen's speech is much better. There are still some weird things going on with all of that but he is working hard on his tongue twister and sound assignments. He is a bit of a language arts teacher's dream. We have a new language and parts of language focus in common. Who knew the linguistics dabbling would be so helpful?
He is becoming quite cultured as well as he has been encouraged to eat slowly and to swallow and pause before speaking. Neither of which come very naturally to him. :).
Fatigue is a big issue and apparently, that is quite common with stroke recovery. The brain just takes time to heal. He is more my speed now, so that is nice. :)
He is happy to have passed the grandpa driving test. One more step in the process and he will be back to driving. Every day he has some kind of appointment: OT, speech therapy, family doc, MRI, stroke clinic....he's very popular. We are so grateful for everyone who has helped get him here and there when I was at work....especially Jillian Ackroyd and Sid Jones ......and many more. Thank you.

From the Pool to the Air: Gains from Swimming

I read a great article where Michael Phelps was interviewed. He talked about visualisation and how it helped him stay focused and accomplish his goals.

When Jill was in Montreal doing her flight attendant training, some of the people in her group would get totally stressed out and unable to achieve what they wanted on their performance assessments and their written tests. I'm sure Jill's experiences with swimming helped her to focus on the moment and do what she needed to do.

Okay.....I will say it...I'm 50!

I'm 50!!

I have been dreading this day. 50 just seems so old.

Although, I prefer to tell people I'm closer to 40 than 30.

Then my friend, Karen, posted this:

I decided she was right. There is no sense feeling sheepish about being 50. While I'm not everything I want to be, and my life has room for much improvement, I will embrace 50 and continue on my quest.  Thanks for being a bright light, Karen!

I went to the office with Allen on Saturday. I haven't done that for years, thanks to Saturday swim practices....but I just might be in a place to turn over a new leaf. "They" say partnership makes all the difference. I'm excited to be more involved in our business.

After the office Allen and I went out for brunch to a beautiful restaurant. The ownership has changed, but it was still as good as ever. I totally recommend    ProvisionYYC. Great food! I had eggs benedict with mushrooms and kale. Allen had steak and eggs. I could do that every Saturday!

There is a bookstore right across the street called Shelf Life books. I loved how they have their children's books colour coded. :)
We spent a good hour or so there browsing and sharing great finds and laughing about dogs in the air.

Tonight I got together with some friends. It was our regular dinner club get together, but they surprised me with a cake and a Fitbit!! I'm very excited about the Fitbit. In to my next decade of good health!

...but first, cake!!

Jill sent me this picture. A couple blocks from her hotel is this awesome library where she studies. It does my heart good just to look at the picture. We do appreciate beautiful libraries in our family! #happinessproject2017

Friendship Baking

This guy is multi talented and has a good heart. He is making cinnamon buns for a friend (well, one pan for a friend, one pan for him and Bobby is actually what will most likely happen). Smells so good! #happinessproject2017 #dietsabatoger

Mmmmmm! Breakfast

Today there was a Welcome Back breakfast for us at school! We have an amazing group of parents who are supportive and kind. Just one more great thing about my job that makes my #happinessproject2017 easy!

Back to School Blessings

First day back to school: it was indoor recess. The courtyard wasn't shovelled. It was clear a number of us weren't really ready to be back....which makes teaching tough. On the other hand, I also received 16 hugs, heard a story from a parent about her child's gratitude prayer for having the greatest teacher and to top it off.....I got a necklace beaded on a string of dental floss. I love my job. #happinessproject2017

Montreal

Big changes in our family! Today Jill is off to Montreal. She got a job as a flight attendant with Air Canada and the training is in Montreal. We are sure going to miss her.

Happy New Year!

Day 1 and no picture. What a bad start.

I decided I would write anyway. If I were to take a picture I'd take one of my friends at church and I sitting on the back row in Relief Society having a great time. Or I'd take one of Jill off with her friends for her last day before she goes to Montreal. Or I'd take one of the awesome roast we had for dinner that Allen bought the other day. Or I'd take one of Peirce napping as he tries to recover from a really fun New Year's eve.

But I didn't. Today has been a quiet and relaxing day. I have loved it. Ready to get at it tomorrow though!
